Necessary tools and equipment

1. Sewing machine

A good sewing machine is the backbone of any sewing project.

You can choose from a range of machines, from basic models to more advanced ones with additional features.

The prices starts at US$ 40 for very basic machines with basic features.

But from US$ 200 you can already get a machine for life with almost all the necessary functions for all activities.

2. Thread

Thread is used to stitch fabric together. Choose a high-quality thread that matches the color of your fabric.

3. Fabric scissors

A good pair of fabric scissors is essential for cutting your fabric accurately. Don’t use them for anything else to keep them sharp.

A measuring tape is used to measure your fabric accurately. Look for one that’s at least 60 inches long.

5. Pins

Pins are used to hold fabric together while you sew. Look for pins with sharp points and smooth heads.

6. Seam ripper

A seam ripper is used to remove stitches when you make a mistake.

7. Cutting mat

A cutting mat is used to protect your work surface when cutting your fabric with a rotary cutter.

Choosing the right fabric

Choosing the right fabric for your project is important. Here are some tips to help you choose the right fabric:

Consider the weight, fiber content, and weave of the fabric. Different fabrics have different properties that affect how they behave when sewn.

Different fabrics are better suited for different types of projects. For example, lightweight cotton is great for summer dresses, while heavy wool is better suited for winter coats.

Learning basic sewing techniques is essential for any sewing project. Here are some of the most important techniques if you start sewing classes:

  • Threading the machine: This involves threading the top thread through the machine and the needle.
  • Winding the bobbin: The bobbin is a small spool that holds thread underneath your fabric. Winding the bobbin correctly is essential for successful sewing.
  • Sewing a straight stitch: A straight stitch is the most basic type of stitch. It’s used to sew two pieces of fabric together.
  • Sewing a zigzag stitch: A zigzag stitch is used to finish the raw edges of your fabric and prevent them from fraying.
  • Sewing a seam: A seam is the line of stitching that joins two pieces of fabric together.

By mastering these basic techniques, you’ll be able to tackle a wide range of sewing projects and build your skills gradually.

Don’t be afraid to start with simple projects and work your way up to more complex ones as your skills improve.

How to start

1. Define what you want to do

Let’s start from the beginning. It’s important to define the end product of your first project.

We’ve looked at the various ways to get started in sewing. Group classes, individual classes, tutorials on youtube, online courses among many other options.

The way that we saw as having the best option for Sewing classes for adults was the online course.

We bought 5 online courses and the one that made us most comfortable both in terms of teaching and the teachers experience was the creative bug.

We register for 7 days free and get access to all your courses.

What caught our attention is that there is the possibility of having access to different courses from different professors.

We started with some quick courses on how to handle and the basic features of the sewing machine, we started to learn about the different types of fabric and we took a look at projects that we would like to develop.

In our case, we would like to create some new cushions for our office and the process for creating and making children’s clothing.

Throw pillows

We managed to start our work by making 4 pillows successfully. Please disregard our mascot (Jully) in the middle of our beautiful works.

The learnings here were:

  • How the sewing machine works
  • Type of fabric and thread
  • Basic sewing and pattern making techniques
  • How to sew a zipper

Chair Back

Basically with the same skill to make the cushions, we made this backrest for 2 chairs that were uncomfortable because of the backrest.

We really enjoyed the 7 days free and the monthly fee is very reasonably priced for the quality of the classes.

Not at all. With a few hours of classes and a borrowed sewing machine, we managed to make products that we never thought possible without any previous experience. Trust me, if we did it, you can too.
